Habitat: Log Jamming and “There is a season, tern, tern, tern…. “

Jim Freck in the water gets some help from Dennis Guttman and his UTV to clear the log jam on Cedar Creek

With DNR field staff prohibited from going afield, our Adopt A Wildlife Area teams have been finding ways to help fill the gap on our public hunting lands:  Scott Hamele is mowing trails at Mud Lake,  watch out beavers as logjams prove to be no problem for Mike Depies’ Team Jackson Marsh (although I understand the team went home a little damper than they arrived) and Team Valley Chapter is burning through nesting structures (not literally) in their quest to hang one on every pipe they can find (or install) near a wetland.

And for an inspiring example of how creative persistence can help an endangered species, read Mike Alaimo’s piece on the nesting success his innovative floating platforms have had with the endangered black tern – three years in the making!

Want to play a role on existing project sites, or lead a new project in your ‘hood?  Let Habitat Chair Jim Freck know jamesfreck@aol.com.  We can especially use some additional help in the area around Mead Wildlife Area, but extra hands everywhere or anywhere are welcome.

And don’t forget that WWA’s wetland ecologist Peter Ziegler is getting some new marsh traction after another slippery, wet spring in many areas of Wisconsin!
