Hunter Advocacy

Our Policy Committee has been busy this summer, here are a few things we’re working on:

  1. Duck Stamp license fee increase, the first in 21 years, is moving along. We spoke with the governor’s office to get their support, and when the legislature returns we’ll be reaching out to them too.  A call to your state legislators would be an easy way to play a role.
  2. You may have read in the August membership newsletter that we are considering a sandhill crane hunt. Although the science clearly supports this, the decision will turn on emotional issues about this large, iconic bird that was rescued from near extinction. Remember the morning dove season – this will likely be more difficult.  Some readers of that earlier newsletter got back to me and wanted to play a role. For now, they will be kept abreast of what’s happening and will, when the time is right, be able to reach out to legislators and the administration to voice their opinions.
  3. Knowles-Nelson Stewardship will be in the news over the coming few months as proponents seek it’s reauthorization and funding. This program has been very good for Wisconsin outdoors-men and -women.  WWA will support the continuation of this important program.
  4. We’ve also been asked to comment on an effort to simplify receiving a license and the various permits you need to hunt. Any thoughts? Let me know at bruceross@wi.rr.com.
