Nesting Structures

Cavity nesting birds like wood ducks, buffleheads and hooded mergansers rely on tree cavities for breeding success.  But with deforestation and development, fewer natural cavities exist.

Nesting structures are man-made assemblies which can supplement natural nesting cavities with a safe, comfortable alternative. Hen houses can provide a safe location for mallards to nest away from predation.

WWA has the largest wood duck box operation in the state, with volunteers maintaining hundreds of boxes every year across the state.

We are also a great source for inexpensive, high-quality boxes (or kits) that you can establish on your property.

These efforts produce thousands of ducklings each year. The impact is multiplied when those ducklings mature and return to Wisconsin to raise their own broods.
