Even though the temps are in the nineties as I write this column at the beginning of our last full week of August, it certainly smells like fall. Leaves are falling, mornings are cool and our wildfowl are starting to be active. I saw my first wood ducks on my pond this week, the first I’ve seen since early June!
It’s time to start your planning for our upcoming waterfowl seasons. September 1st marks the opening of early Teal statewide which runs through September 9th. Early goose also opens September 1st and runs through September 15th. Regular goose opens on September 16th and the North duck season opens on September 26th. It seems we have been waiting for September for over nine months. Check your “Hunt Wild” app for harvest info, shooting times, boundaries and split closing throughout the season.
Many of you made it out to one of our sporting clay shooting events this summer to sharpen your eye and get the dust out of your scattergun. Thank you to all who attended our shoots – you made them all very successful!
Our Wisconsin State Duck and Goose Calling Championships are in the books, and congratulations to all of our competitors. Check out the winners here!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our postponed fundraising events will now be held over the next few months. Please check out our website at wisducks.org and attend one of these events in your area. We continue to need your support to ensure that we can continue with all of our habitat and education projects as you have grown to expect from your organization.
Thanks to all of you who have supported WWA over this challenging and unpredictable time. While the pandemic has caused the postponement and cancellation of many events, your WWA has grown stronger and has implemented innovative opportunities. All of our returning events will be held in a safe and healthy manner to ensure the safety and well being of our volunteers, members and attendees.
Please get out and enjoy the seasons; I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events, or maybe in the marsh, or on the Bay chasing ducks and geese!
Stay safe and healthy!
