Waterfowl Season Kickoff Edition

This article originally appeared in Wisconsin Waterfowl Association’s September, 2022 Newsletter edition.

As I write, it’s the opening day of teal season:  I’m getting reports (and pictures) of how well my friends are doing in the marshes. And now Tack seems to be able to read calendars because he’s circling my desk, stopping only long enough to nudge my leg: “let’s go, Dad” visible in his pleading eyes.  But here I sit typing out the last few sentences needed to publish September’s newsletter – we really want to get the latest information to you as you start your own seasons. Enjoy:

  • Attendees enjoy the 2nd Waterfowl Hunters EXPO last Saturday

I just attended a DNR briefing by state waterfowl manager Taylor Finger. Check out his update on the state-of -the-state’s waterfowling.

  • We just held our second Waterfowl Hunters EXPO –what a blast!  Improved in every way over our inaugural effort.  We run down the numbers with you in this issue, but we will publish a separate newsletter mid-month to give you the full rundown.
  • Want to contribute to waterfowling science efforts? We offer a couple of ways, buried in the newsletter; see if you can find them.
  • The USFWS just reported out the first breeding population surveys since the start of COVID (2019). We share the complete report with you.
  • Speaking of Tack, my trusty four-legged hunting companion, Dr. K.C. offers some straight-up advice about what to feed him for peak performance in the field.
  • And what about you? Are you in shape for the season? It may be too late for the teal season, but not for the regular season. Check out our article with specific regimens on the best way to get there.
  • Despite all the excitement of a new season, remember that no duck is worth your life or that of another. Some great safety reminders from our friendly neighborhood warden.  A quick scan could save your life.
  • Need to make room for new taxidermy? Dr. Robert Jadin tell us how to gift unwanted taxidermy that may bring it new purpose.

Have fun… and be safe out there!

See you on the marsh!
